James Loots is the founder of Barracks Row Consulting, a Washington DC-based business advisory firm that helps small business owners build stronger, more sustainable operations. With more than four decades of experience as an attorney and business counselor in the Washington DC area, James Loots brings a depth of practical knowledge to every client engagement. After graduating from the University of Michigan Law School, James Loots spent his career advising small businesses, associations, and nonprofit organizations on employment law, regulatory compliance, dispute resolution, and organizational planning. He earned his undergraduate degree in journalism from Northwestern University, an experience he credits with shaping his approach to consulting: careful listening, clear communication, and a focus on understanding each client's specific situation before offering guidance. James Loots founded Barracks Row Consulting in 2017 to focus exclusively on the operational and structural challenges that small business owners face. The firm's advisory work covers commercial lease strategy, employment practices and compliance, business formation and liability protection, financial analysis, and regulatory navigation. Barracks Row Consulting works with clients across a range of industries, with particular experience supporting restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and neighborhood retail businesses in the Washington DC metropolitan area.

Throughout his career, James Loots has been an active member of the Washington DC community. He has served as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner on Capitol Hill, as a board member of the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, and as a supporter of human rights organizations and arts institutions across the District. He was named Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year by the DC Bar in 1987 and has been desdignated Martindale-Hubbell ;s highest "AV" rated for his superior skills and unerring ethical standards. He also was awarded the AVVO SuperLawyers peer designation from 2018 through 2024 Although no longer practicing law, James Loots continues to lend his decades of involvement in small business structure and management to advise Barracks Row Consulting clients on their day to day business challenges.
